To the rolling hills and mountains of Virginia we go. The 20+ turn course of one of Darrel's stomping ground: VIR.
Race 1: We all started in the back. Quick to wrecking, turn one turned on almost all of us. Human pin balls through the field, Scot and Darrel had an altercation just prior to the uphill Esses.
Darrel Would get punted several more times before finally getting going again. Scot wasn't in much better position as he struggled against traffic and learning the track. Like most places he could count the number of laps run prior on one hand...So of course, they would meet again, this time Darrel giving back a little.
Despite the rough housing, they would climb the order to get back into 8th (Scot) and 10th (Darrel). Sandy got bounced out fairly early on and had to take a dip at the back.
Race 2: After a 'net black out of a few minutes, we requalified with Scot and Darrel 2 and 1 and with half the laps (5 vs 10). The first run pre-blackout, Darrel got spun in 3. This time, Scot would take the brunt of abuse at the first corner.
Sadly, that was just the beginning of the end. He would finish but only after enough abuse to knock him back to the mid twenties. Sandy also suffered hardship from the pack, getting turned in traditional fashion.
Darrel held the course and stayed ahead for the whole race. I came close but various goofs on my part kept me from making it too interesting...if only there was one more lap...
Race 3: We all started or opted for the back for a speedy green. Scot and I were doing a good job of crowd control until the Esses. At that point, I chucked back a bit to give Scot room and it was my undoing.
Seeing all the fun I had, Scot had a go at the "grass line"
Fooling aside, we all worked our way to the top of the field. Darrel and I had a good battle for first going through the last two laps. The first pass he made was through one setting up a pic with a lap car. I came right back through 3 and run up the inside.
We kept this up all the way around, nose to tail. Come the last lap, we got to the back stretch and I ran out of gas. See, when we went to 5 laps, I upped the fuel/tire usage multiplier and never turned it back down after upping the laps to 10 again. Scot also tumbled down from an empty tank. We managed top 20 positions but it could have been much better. Darrel, curiously, had enough fuel to run several more cool down laps. I suspect Waltrip may be consulting with Darrel's crew...
The Final Four is set and we should have this series wrapped up by the end of the month. Darrel's got guns aimed on 3rd (maybe 2nd?), Scot's looking for a top 15 and Sandy's got a few nipping at his heals.
