Supercars 17 - Teretonga

The season started without too many hitches.  After several track file adjustments and a few misfires on the starts we got some exciting racing in.  We started the AI at 84 and moved to 88 for the final races.  They weren't always the fastest but they could be formidable.

Race 1:
With the AI on a handicap, four humans were immediately at the front from qualifying.  Gurton Buster on the pole even though he was on the outside of the first turn.

Everything was clean and cool until lap two when Darrel got swiped by Whincup slowing for turn one.

His race was done almost immediately.

Keeping pace in second, I looped it out of the hairpin right in front of Zack.

GB wanted to keep it close and did the same thing a lap later to let us catch up.

At the back of the field, Sandy was struggling with some of the AI getting in his line and had some off moments.

As I caught back up to Zack, The Bear gave us plenty of room to race.

While that was happening, Buster was up front, turning himself around after the dog leg.

Zack and I slung past and I had the advantage at turn one.

And then I did almost the exact same thing a lap later.

In an attempt to, I assume, avoid me, The Gurt looped it as well but ended up in a forward facing position, able to pull into second just ahead.

For several laps, we accordianed back together as we ran into lap traffic.  It was all hands on wheel as we got dicey coming on to the front stretch.

We got sorted out and were within a second of each other going into the esses.

When I misjudged Zack's braking and my closing distance, unable to move out of the way in time, sending Zack into the tires and out of contention.

Gurton had capitalized on my play time with Zack and took the lead, only to run wide at the same spot a lap later.

He kept things close as we maneuvered through traffic.

We were quite racey when I went way too fast into turn one.

Zack did a repeat a few laps later, hurting himself bad.

Leaving no more challengers for GB's win.

Race 2:
Computers up to 88 and another cracking start.

It was clean until Castrol at turn 2 where Darrel ran Shane Van Gisbergen out right in front of the field.

That stacked up the field for the esses right in front of Gurton Buster and Sandy Smith who had lousy qualifying runs.

Zack Webster was making a daring move around Winterbottom on lap two at the same location where he ran it too hot and too left, loosing the car into the gravel trap.

He got so far off, he had to trace the route back until he was away from the tire cliff losing several positions.

Hamilton kept up the excitement as he kept over driving "The Elbow" at turn 7.

Castrol was exciting again as Hamilton was playing with fire, attacking Scott Pye.

An unlikely occurrence as Buster loops it at the Loop in turn 1, running right with van Gisbergen.

Out of Brickyard and into turn 7, nearly all the humans were right back together.

Sandy was out in the weeds in front of Holdsworth.

And not a lap later, Darrel was again too hot into Elbow, walloping the tire wall.

Around halfway or so, Gurton Buster was up into the teens, looking for a top 5 in the next few laps.

He then also slipped up one some debris (most likely) left from team Dick's and rounded himself out.

Speaking of Dick's, Sandy was playing with Rick Kelly, the other brother he was having fun with, getting rounded at Brickyard.

While Webster was having a mostly clean race, he still managed to put a tire wrong in the heavily abused runoff at turn 7.

While lapping down the field, I got on the inside of Todd Kelly who spent several corners in my way.  I know it's just an exhibition but he had it coming.

Gurton Buster managed to break the top 10 with Zack Webster not far behind after some strong yet stunted comebacks.  I mostly kept it clean and stayed on for the win.

Race 3:
Unfortunately I didn't save the replay on this one.  We ran another 15 (down from 20 at race 1).  I had pole next to Gurton Buster.  We went through the Loop together but I ran it wide, falling all the way back to the rear where Todd Kelly got revenge as I tried to rejoin.  In a way it was fun for me because I got to see Darrel go through the most dramatic barrel roll I've seen on a road coarse.  Slowing for turn 7, he was a little over run by Fabian Coulthard.  That got him sideways but it was James Courtney who blew into his door and rolled him through the sand trap.  Dead and done.  It wasn't as exciting a race from then on.  Gurton ran into problems and ended up falling back a ways while Zack held on for the win over me by about 15 seconds or so.

A good warm up to the series and definitely room for potential.  We'll head to Adelaide for the first two points rounds of the season.

Supercar Championship 2017

We move from the insanity that is the Twisted Metal Tour to the crazy carnival of Australian touring cars: The Supercar Championship.  Formerly the V8 Supercars, this series drives like tactical warheads playing chess at supersonic speeds.  It will be somewhat difficult moving from what we just did to the more disciplined styles of the Aussie Supercars.  While we would like to bash our way through the field (and that may still happen on occasion) we need to show reserve, patience and racecraft to reflect the same attitude the series consistently represents...mostly.  Let's look at what we should expect for this series over the next few months.

Series: V8 Supercars - 2014 carset <-click to download
Timing: Practice-7-8pm EST, Qualifying/Racing 8-9 or 9:30.
AI: Active, maxed for 2014 field of VASC drivers
Damage: Realistic
Starts: Standing*
Yellows: Off
Hardcore Mode: Visual only (Aids allowed)
Fixed Setup: Disabled
Weather: Realistic

With the exception of the opening exhibition races at Teratunga, all races will feature one mandatory pit stop and fuel/tire wear will be adjusted to enforce this.  The endurance races (green italics) will require a second stop during each race.  Aside from Surfer's Paradise, the endurance races will use the Endurance points format while all others will use the Standard format.  Note that some tracks are unavailable and replaced with other Australian or previously VASC visited tracks.

Rules and Conduct
- All flags (except yellow) will be observed.  In cases of technical issues or special circumstances, black flags may be cleared.
- Respect track limits.  Taking advantage may result in penalties.
- Racing incidents do happen but deliberate contact (divebombing) is not allowed.  If you gain advantage by way of contact, you may be asked to redress (allow the car to pass).  This will apply to ALL competitors (AI and player).  Failure to do so could result in timed and/or points penalties.
- Race director decisions are final during the race.  Appeals may be made post-race for review and redress.
- Rules may be amended at any point during the season for purposes of competition.
- No whining.
Penalties.
- Misconduct will be considered case by case.
- Most incidents will be given a verbal warning.  Severe or repeat infractions will result in timed penalties from 10, 20, 30, 60, 120, 240 seconds.  After the fifth penalty (or possibly before, depending on severity) drivers may be asked to retire or be removed from the active race.
- Extreme cases of misconduct on or off the track may result in point deductions or banning from the league.

Makeup Races
At the end of the series, driver finishes will be averaged per driver and up to 6 missed races worth of points will be awarded.  Note that the Standard points will be used.
