The '87 Winston Cup 2016 Series

No sooner are we done with the last series than we jump into a whole new one.  As per mostly tradition, we will be following the Cup schedule for this series.  But instead of the 2015 mod and current templates, we're going to run the same tracks with the legends from 1987.  That's right, the Aerowar88 mod with probably the most famous set of drivers from the era if not all time.  Memorable schemes like Darrel Waltrip's Tide 17 or Earnhardt's blue and yellow Wrangler mobile.  We'll also be ignoring the stupid Chase points system and using the original points set forth from 1975 (which ran up until 2004 for those keeping track).  However, we will still allow for lucky dogs so as to keep competition alive.  Here's the breakdown of the series:

Rules:
  • Standard driving rules based on the tracks (No cutting corners, pass pace car, etc)
  • Black flags will be enforced and cleared only at race control's discretion
  • Lucky dog for first car off lead lap
  • Mandatory yellows and at least ONE stop for fuel.
  • Full damage
  • Realistic weather
  • Mulligans are in effect if a yellow is thrown before the race leader completes lap 1.
  • Unsportsmanlike conduct will be warned and reprimanded where necessary
  • Makeup points will be awarded to drivers for each DNS up to 6 races at the end of the season.  Make ups are not allowed against the final race, you MUST attend to earn there.
  • No whining
  • I may adjust rules as necessary to uphold the spirit of competition (Jr./France rule)
Format:
Every Wednesday we will complete events on the following time table:
  • 19:00 EST - Practice officially begins
  • 19:55 EST - Qualifying begins
  • 19:55 EST - Happy Hour will briefly run for drivers to learn their pits
  • 20:00 EST - Race begins
  • 21:00/30 EST - Race ends

I've painted cars for a few of you so far.  Once I get requested numbers, I can finish up some quick paints and get you a lovely customized car for your racing pleasure.

REMEMBER - The lovely Jackass trophy is up for grabs this season, so there's a lot more at stake than just bragging rights.  You get to write your name on it too!  I'll go over that more as the awarding gets closer.  See you next week.

Pot Luck 2015 - 27-28 Road America

We close this odd and chaotic chapter of our racing universe at the wonderful US road course: Road America.  Despite the finality of this finale, our crew of drivers was quite humble and small.  Just three of us for Race 1 and four for Race 2.  Sadly, there wasn't as much good racing between humans but some decent racing at points along the way.

Race 1:
Darrel had the pole with me back in the top 20 and Sandy at the rear.

Mania in turn one which I may have had a hand in.

And continued through following turns and straights.

But I wasn't the only one as the AI had plenty of their own problems through calamity corner.

My reign of terror didn't last long as my car came unglued over a few laps.

There was some odd behavior with my chassis that was causing it to buck and kick under power and braking; two important things to have at this track.

Ultimately I became involved with too many incidents and that was the end.

Sandy also had some unfortunate run-ins...

...and run offs during his run.

About 2/3rds of the way through, the carousel caught him out and he clipped the tire wall, rendering his engine serviceable.

Darrel kept a cool head and cruised to an easy and relatively uneventful win.

Race 2:
After figuring out that my EXE file was the source of my frustrations (the height fix for pta mods) and shot to the front of the queue for qualifying.  I thought I would be up there with Darrel but he booched his qualy run and started at the back.

I made him a deal that if he managed to make it up to second and I was still running first, I'd slow up so we could have a shoot out.  And he responded by tearing apart the competition.

Throwing debris in front of his human allies.

And occasionally running them off road.

Just before reaching that top spot, Darrel over powered his rear wheels through turn one (or two?) and slid out.

While he managed to recover and start clawing back up, Dan Wheldon was his ultimate nail-in-the-coffin.

Scot also encountered the AI and difficulty of the track in one go.  But he did manage to complete laps.  Not bad for no practice.  Really hardly any.

I was having far more troubles pushing my car than I should have.  Probably because I was so excited to have a driveable car.

This hurt me at one point when I well overdrove a corner and smoked the tire into the tire barrier.

I had enough of a lead I could pit and only lose a few slots.

Which I managed back after a few laps, just before the end.

Sandy was also having some uncharacteristic spins and slides which kept him from gaining those desperately needed points to pass the Schumachers.

I rounded out the last race of the season taking the checkered flag and the top spot in points for the year.  This won me the all new Tnadz Racing Trophy:
Yes, this too can be yours for a season if the price is right.  Or rather, if you win.  The next season.  Which will be the Aerowar 88 mod running on the 2016 Chase schedule (but with the old school points).  No chartering here.  We'll race the old '87 car set which I'll send out this weekend with painted cars.  I'll need to know which numbers everyone wants.  But more on that later.  For now, Results!
