'87 Winston Cup 2016 Series - 13 Charlotte

Well, a light crew of me, my dad and Darrel.  Charlotte Night begins.

Darrel went for it but was mid field and immediately fell to the back.

I tried my luck at passing the field but ended up on the outside and Harry Gant break checked when being afraid of Greg Sacks.

I spun and had no damage.  Shocking actually.

I somehow was not a lap down and stayed out.  But Dale Jarrett ruined it for both me and Sandy in trying to lead a lap.

I stomped the gas and tried to get away.

But being out of sequence hurt me and I needed to pit before the field.

And Darrel happened to pick this time toe start losing control of his car.

He almost saved it.

And then the field got him.  Ricky Rudd tapped him and into Kyle Petty.

Then the parking lot started.

And Darrel was much apart of it.

Despite his ability to kill others, he could not stay alive himself.

So Sandy and I were at the back on the restart.

As I worked the way forward, I couldn't stay off of Morgan Sheppard and he was wrecked.

Fortunately, this helped Sandy get his extra points.

When we were going again, I was right near the front.  Trying to get around Kyle Petty a lap down, I got loose avoiding him and Ken Schradder.

I would not be as lucky with this incident.

But the damage wasn't too bad and I managed to ruin Dale Earnhardt's race.

So back to square one.

And again I was trying to work my way up when Dale Jarrett caused me grief.

I bounced around wildly and got damaged.

So pit with no caution.

It wasn't the end either as I caught Lake Speed and both he and Derrick Cope were idiots and stopped in the corner.

But Davey Allison wouldn't get out of the way.

And Alan Kulwicki wouldn't stop being an idiot.  I was dangerously hurt after this one and Sandy got to see it all...again.

While getting lapped under green, Bill Elliott felt the need to hit me out of 4.

I bounced the wall...

And got spun.

Thanks to Cope, I was dangerously damaged again.

And the pit crew was back to work trying to resuscitate my battered ride.

The next caution was from Sauter and Bobby Allison going three wide.

Bobby mostly wrecked on his own but Sandy was almost involved.

This pretty much ended the race under caution and I wanted Harry Gant to know how much I appreciated his driving.

On to Pocono.

'87 Winston Cup 2016 Series - 12 Dover

The Spring races are in the bag and we now move to the summer trimester.  Dover proved that it is a difficult mile long oval that is as fun as it is unforgiving.

Things started off as they usually do with qualifying efforts all over the field (Zack attempting to use all of qualifying while still making all his laps).

Sandy had started exactly mid pack, but he had practiced for this occasion.  He demonstrated by taking out Rick Wilson who offered to get in his way.

With only a few laps in and the AI dumb enough to refuel, Sandy moved to second.

On the next green run, we ran long enough that I caught Scot.  To his defense, he was laying back because he thought he was waiting for other cars, I think.

It didn't matter as he would get the lucky dog on lap 22 when Darrel clobbered the outside wall off four.

The safer barrier sent him to the not-so-safer barrier on the inside and destroyed his car immensely.  Still running but only enough to hit minimum speed.

The next yellow happened shortly after when Scot was trying to make up ground and bumped Labonte after touching the apron.

This caused Morgan Shephard to be as indecisive as a cat coming to pit road so he killed himself instead.

And took others with him.  Well done.  Zack scrapped the outside wall but was otherwise unharmed.

On this restart, Darrel laid back while Sandy pressed hard towards the front group to regain his spots.

During this time, the pack was getting unruly and Rick Wilson ran his shitter ride right up where it didn't belong.

Caution was out.

Zack harmless spun himself out while braking to avoid breaking.

Once again, the Smith's were set up for tragedy.  Like Phoenix, we couldn't help ourselves and it was my fault this time as I booched a simple countdown to green.  Sandy anticipated correctly (at least in ANY other start scenario) and promptly rammed my ass.

This coasted me to the wall which I thought was me wheel spinning and I started coming back across. the track.

Out of reflex, Sandy went lower anticipating a wreck high and Michael Waltrip was right there.

The two were slightly entangled and started smashing the wall as I weaved about for control.

Despite being at the very front of the field (and a similar situation to Jimmie Johnson's gear change failure at the actual track) there was very little wreck at all.

But regardless of taking little damage, an unusually quick return of the pace car and a miscue by his spotter (who was technically correct to say the pits were open), Sandy took his pit instead of passing the pace car like he should have and went an unrecoverable, lap down.

The next run, Zack was continuing to struggle with his terrible internet connection.  One minute he was there...

...the next he was killing people while cloaked.

This terrified humans and AI alike.  But it is the second time Terry Labonte was wrecked, so not all bad.

A few laps after the next green and he was at it again.

Crushing one of the many Cale Yarboroughs on the track.

This time, there were casualties as Scot got his right side torn up.

Like last week, he might have been fine if not for a back marker who came along to punt him.  Dead.

And after Alan Kulwicki had a taste for human fenders, he launched after The Bear with vigor.

Trying to make the most of his situation, Sandy was running up through the order when he got to another Cale Yarborough.

This would not be a simple bump and run, however.

Getting closer to the end now and Darrel had done a fairly good job of staying out of trouble when he was forced low going into turn three.

He came up and threw some weight into Ken Schrader.

Kenny went for a ride and wrecked many other Cale Yarboroughs.

With about five laps left, we had little other in the way of wrecking and I took another win to catch my rivals, Earnhardt and Bonnett.

Next week it's Charolette where we hold the record for 35 DNFs.  Records were made to be broken, Scot.
