'87 Winston Cup 2016 Series - 32 Talladega

We're getting close to closing out this season with only four races left.  I want to quickly point out that the points will be updated to accurately reflect where we are.  Previously, a few races were excluded as a result from me switching systems so that has been addressed.  For Talladega, I also want to mention that this 2015 version is crap (at least for me) and caused extreme stuttering (more on that in a moment) so future races will be held with a different version.  This was the same issue last time but even more extreme now.  I think Microsoft was involved somehow.

The start was clean, though the qualifying was bad for humans.  Mark and I were leading the charge with our 31-32 starting spots.  He moved up while I struggled with the handful of frames I was given to see with.

While I was scaring myself and the rest of the humans driving like Darrel after eye surgery, Ben Parsons moved right on into Ken Schrader who was left out of line.  The two turned right into Buddy Baker and all hell broke loose for the Big One.

At the back, I had around two frames of smoke before I piled into Tim Richmond.  I used this time to brace myself against the wall as much as possible.  It almost worked until my loving father blew up the back end.  Not that he had any more time to react.  To the left of us, Darrel was getting caught in chicanery and tossed about, mostly without incident.

Up at the impetus of the accident, Mark was left pretty much alone and had a clean line on the inside.  Go Wrangler.

As half the field was crashing, swerving or slamming on the brakes, Scot was gently slowing down in the back, anxiously waiting to see just how many spots he was about to make up...and slightly sad that he didn't cause this in the first place.

But while he waited patiently to pick through his bounty of hurt-n-dead competition, Mike Potter came flying out of nowhere and barreled directly into him for no reason at all.  Looking at the replay, Potter just sucked wind off the line and fell back for two laps before this happened.  To make it even worse, he suffered no damage and went on to place well.  His points were stripped.

Zack managed to avoid  much damage and only had his nose mooshed in a tad and smoked tires.

On the restart, all humans except Mark (and Scot who was badly dead) were at the back.

As many of the laps roared on, he put up a valiant effort to stay at the front, doing the SuperSpeedway Shuffle.  All the while, The Bear was sneaking up to catch him.

We then had green flag stops without incident and the field generally spread out.

After a cycle or two, Zack was trailing Mark who was the effective leader at this point and it was shaping up to be a showdown between these two.

But on his last stop, Zack blew it and sped on pit road.  He was kicking himself violently.

Coming to the last 4-5 laps, Mark was leading the way and that blue car only about a second or two back was Sandy, working his tires off to catch him.

Just after that last picture was taken, Darrel had a brown out at his house (not in his pants) and collided with Ken Schrader (who did have a brown out in his pants).

Darrel was flung to the wall and the yellow was out.

Unfortunately, his engine was ruined right before he hit the wall, thanks to some tunneling.  He could have easily made it to the end and would have finished fairly well, possibly top 10.

This gave Mark the win under caution.  While Sandy would have fought hard for a good run, it's doubtful he would have made it the whole way as his tank was dryer than Southern Baptist's wedding.  To celebrate, Mark spun at the line.  I know you're excited to be back but, maybe let the rest of us cross the line next time, Mark?  Now go and enjoy your wine.  As for Bear and Zack, only 91 points separate the two.  Can Sandy make up the deficit in four races?  It'll be fun to see.

We go from big to small at Martinsville next week.

'87 Winston Cup 2016 Series - 31 Kansas

Okay so here we go Kansas. The race started out promising enough for humans at the front with only Scot as the tail gunner.
We didn't know if it was going to be a complete disaster or smooth ride.
As it turned out it was actually pretty smooth sailing for the first 20 laps or so. All of us stayed out of trouble although Sandy was having some difficulty with closer traffic.
And actually it was Sandy who was the first human to hit the pits.
Which as it turns out was a terrible idea. Scot came into the turn three area a little bit too hot and tore up the side of Buddy Arrington.
But it was Buddy who would be getting the last laugh as he came strolling down the track to slam into the side of Scot.
Sadly Scot was out of the race but his sacrifice was not in vain. It gave us the opportunity of pitting just at the end of our fuel window. Except for Sandy.
Back under green and the humans are starting to spread out a little bit from the stops.
I'm not exactly sure what happened here. It almost looked like Dale Earnhardt got into the side of Zack just the slightest bit but it didn't look like they actually made any contact when I was reviewing it.
Regardless, the damage was done and Zack was all sorts of out of control.
Which ended up shooting Darrell Waltrip and Bill Elliott right into the front of Darrel's 61 machine.
Shockingly enough Darrel managed to gently glide up into the wall and obtained very little damage at all. Meanwhile much of the rest of the field was not so lucky.
Zack just harmlessly spin around in the track nearly avoiding contact with cars zipping past.
Sandy, who you think would have been safe being at the back of the field from his poorly timed stop, came up to the wreck and slowed down at the smoke cloud.
Little did he know that there was a surprise Ricky Rudd hiding inside. Well this didn't kill him, bu it certainly hurt his chances of finishing well.
After a round of pit stops we went back to green and poor Zack was down a lap.
But Sandy's car had had enough from the previous damage. The engine exploded and the whole thing just wiped out. Fortunately he also took Rick Wilson with him.
Racing back to the line, Zack just eeked out ahead of Sterling Marlin to be the first car lap down and getting the lucky dog.
Now with the rest of the field ahead of him Zack declared war and was going to get as many points ahead of Sandy as he possibly could. Driving his ass off the 23 made it up to about the top 10 with around 30 to go. But as pit stops started to take place he had a very close moment with Harry Gant, running up on him going into Turn 3.
Fortunately, there was no incident and we all managed to cycle through our green flag stops with Zack coming in behind me for second place.
Unfortunately a bad start put him back in 15th and had to climb the hill all over again. Which was proving to be exceedingly dangerous by this point with less than 20 to go.
Fortunately before we all had to pit again Darrel had a large moment with Geoff Bodine, coming up on him just a little bit too fast off the corner and clipping his bumper sending both of them into the wall.
Daryl bounced hard off the inside wall but for the most part was still put together. Sadly, though, because he was so off course, the yellow was not thrown.
After driving past pit road and not coming in (likely because he felt he could just go the rest of the way), he pulled up into traffic and was met by a Brett Bodine.
This resulted in a somewhat exciting accident right in front of me as I came to the line.
Everyone came in and got their pit stops taken care of for the final time. Even Darrel, who is buggered up pretty good by this point. Although, for some reason, Zackcame in twice (I think it had something to do with a black flag but I don't recall).
In either case he was now starting way way back behind the field and had to charge his way back to the front with just about a dozen laps left.
From there on out, it was hard to cope with the walls of Waltrips...
Menacing Means...
Lakes of Speed and daft Duffy's...
Bouts of Bonnetts...
Finally coming home for a fourth-place finish behind Kyle Petty. An excellent way to wrap up the race. Although he still pulled a Harvick and wined slightly about how he could have been second.

With only five races left, Sandy needs to average 29 points ahead of Zack, per race, to have a chance at being the second place human. A tall order.

NOTE: Sterling Marlin is a cheating ass.
