Race 1:
Our first attempt ended after about 6 laps in and a significant amount of whining. Zack had a nasty crash early on but ultimately, it was the massive tunneling under caution that led to the restart. Darrel had the pole and had a significant jump on the field.
Back in the pack, Zack got into the gas and he lurched left, bouncing him off a rival...
...and into the outside barrier. Sadly, this second attempt fared no better than the first. Fate would not let him start his favorite track.
With Darrel and Sandy firmly away after the first caution, I was left to head up the pack while they tried to maintain pace as a pair. Scot was well to the back after tapping the outside wall on the start, trying to avoid some of the aftermath.
After several laps, the due at the front couldn't stay away from the field and we charged up.
Carrying speed, I swept to the outside of Darrel into 3.
And then there was a network blip. Suddenly, it said Darrel hit me and I was in the wall, damaged.
I fell back and was between packs while Darrel and Sandy played with some of the pack that caught them. Suddenly, Castroneves and Bear touched.
He caught the wall HARD.
There was no caution but there was a massive pack roaring around, three wide. They stacked behind me and Alonso and Arnoux entangled.
They swept to the outside and started the big one.
Well part of the big one anyway. As other cars jockeyed, there was more wrecking off of the corner.
And a wall of smoke was made.
When we caught up to Sandy to take the yellow, he was a sitting duck.
The big one part 2, on the same lap.
Amazingly enough, after flipping backwards, Sandy was able to land fairly straight and keep rolling. But this was not a car in contention for much. In fact, it would die on lap 23 of 25 in a puff of Oily Dave smoke.
When we came down to the end, Darrel was leading and, with the help of the pack, I was slowly clawing my way back up.
Darrel clearly had the win and I was doing everything I could for second. Off of four, my car twitched outside and I got caught in the middle.
The front of my car was just touching Hernandez when it just broke free and I had a wheel-to-wheel with Scott Sharp.
I then went careening inside...
...flipping into the air, dead.
But I did cross the line.
Enjoy the win, Darrel!
Race 2:
Second race and an AI on the pole made things a little more congested. Darrel had a bad qualy so he was back with the rest of us humans. Which is to say we were all pretty much top ten.
Wrecking started early deep in the pack.
Then the real disasters started. All humans were doing fine with the yellow out when the network glitching began.
First you see him, now you don't.
When Bear made it back into the server, we were still under yellow. I told him to come on up and I'd give him his lap back. He'd be on the inside and back in second so everything would be essentially how it was. Except he spun me out. I don't think it was his fault but the dominoes were started...
While the rest of the field waited for Bear and me to get to the front, the slowdown caused issues for our fellow humans. Zack was holding pace when he got slightly out of line and an AI spun him. Want to say, Coulthard?
Then Darrel ran smack into the back of Scot, doing so good damage to the two of them.
And it was mayhem while the AI scattered.
Zack had yet another run in in almost the the same exact place while closing up on the field. At this point we were all scattered, cars were in various places all over the track and both Darrel and Zack had gone out and come back in.
When we restarted, I didn't throw another yellow because the last I heard, everyone was catching up. I could then award laps back, clear blacks and move on. But apparently I wasn't clearing blacks fast enough or they just weren't going away because both Darrel and Zack were DQed. They will receive DNSes for this one.
Scot was on his way back to the front but that rear end damage kept him off pace. He was caught by a small pack and promptly wrecked.
Scot style!
On the last lap, a small pack had caught Sandy and me and we were doing everything to hold them back. Even at 98% they are fast.
Fortunately, because of the zany yellow, most of these were lappers so Sandy finished 3rd. Michael Schumacher was right behind me by about a tenth and he was 2nd. Very close finish for a mostly awful race.
Next week we go to Darrel's pick of Michigan. I imagine it will be much smoother.
