Our second large track and another somewhat cookie-cutter. But that works for us just fine at this point. Scot was the only one not towards the front but it worked out later on.
We got off the line just fine and things got hairy quickly.
Going into one, I think Darrel got a little squirrely on cold tires.
Terry Labonte closed and took to his side.
The damage was minimal for Darrel, but Sandy was all thrown off and caught the wall.
This caused a chain reaction.
That just got worse. Except for Sandy who didn't hardly take any damage.
Pretty much everyone came in. Some humans tried to stay out but were denied a lap lead by some other moron that stayed out.
On the restart, I was doing epic battle with my rivals.
And that scared Brett Bodine who hit the wall and was instantly run over by Lake Speed.
They all fell over each other and Lake Speed came back across the track.
Taking out more cars.
And causing more mayhem.
Darrel came on the scene and nearly avoided all cars except the moving chicane of Ulrich, who he slammed the ever-loving snot out of. Both kept facing forward though.
Pits again.
Darrel led a lap and Sandy was the bride's maid.
Darrel stayed out hoping for another quick yellow. At our rate, it was a good bet. I had a good run and went around him but we held 1-2 until the pit window hit.
During this long green flag run, Sandy was working back up the order.
Darrel was actually the first to pit due to his foreshortened fuel strategy. His yellow did not come...But he made it to pit road unencumbered.
He was soon joined as more and more peeled off to top off.
Change often brings cautions. As Petty and Waltrip made for the end of pit road, their alignment was not on...
Darrel Waltrip smacked the pit wall like a pro idiot.
He immediately deflected into Richard Petty...
...who was shot straight onto the track in front of Darrel.
Because nearly everyone had pitted, Sandy and I were the only other ones to come in. I almost ran out of fuel coming to this one. Cautions are stressful.
On the restart, many humans in the back.
Except Darrel who was in the thick of it trying to get his lap back.
He then ran into trouble off of turn two while trying to keep out of trouble.
Scot watched on as nearly all of his fellow humans collided.
Then while taking the next turn, Sandy suddenly starts to oversteer and fights desperately to save it.
At the same moment, Scot is having the exact same issue and spins it around.
Another restart and I'm up fighting with my rivals again while Darrel's fighting for his lead lap.
Then he slides out as cold tires and an upset car just can't hold it down.
The damage was only somewhat moderate but watch what happens here. Darrel is turned and getting ready to rotate back again. Scot is approaching but too far off to really tell what's going on. He just sees smoke and two cars sitting in the middle of the track.
As they close the distance, Darrel sees it's Scot and decides to go low and out of the way. At that precise moment, Scot thinks the car he sees will stay right there and ops for the lower line to avoid Darrel and any slow cars up top.
They both stay horrifyingly committed to the low side.
And collide! Fortunately, very little damage is done to either car. Somehow...
Another set of stops. This one should put us just enough to make it.
Although Sandy stayed out to try and lead a lap but was denied again as Bill Elliott and Rusty Wallace both decided the same thing. This put him third on the restart and we were ready for battle.
I got a good run and called a high pass, adding "hold your line". Still, he gave me more room. It looks like there's plenty to maneuver, but we all know how it looks in the car. And this was the moment that Ulrich thought it best to pull high around Sterling Marlin.
Sandy had no recourse but to hit him and the balance shift threw him inside.
I thought disaster was assured but he managed to barely squeeze in a pocket on the bottom.
But he still lost all those spots.
And wouldn't you know that not half a lap around and those two idiots pulled in to pit. Had they just done that before, Sandy would have led a lap and not had to fight for position.
As it was, I held the lead spot while Sandy ran out of gas and spun himself out in the final turn. Scot did well and was just outside the top 10. We now go to the first road course of the series...Sonoma.
