We wonder south into Myrtle Beach, a good short track with plenty of character. Almost all of us were here as apposed to last week, which meant we had more carnage. Yes we did. This track was also very good for close times. In fact, Smith and son were exactly tied, down to the 1000s for first. At least for most of practice anyway.
Race 1: The sprint was good fun and filled with cautions. All humans at the front. The first yellow came out almost immediately. On the restart, I was leading and tried to anticipate the start, with audio cues to those behind me. But, lo, did I not anticipate well. Apparently, this track has a very narrow window of where the field is to the line before the green goes. I was punching up through the gears with Sandy in tow and almost got right to the line when I registered the yellow was still out and slammed my brakes. Of course no one behind me knew that was happening until we were a caterpillar of cars. Sandy and Scot had it the worst, and I had a new spoiler, restructured from the back of the car. Darrel and a few others managed to get by and on the whole, we were all still well placed. For the rest of the race, Darrel and I stayed towards the front. Sandy was working his way through the field. Scot was having some difficulty getting his car to behave as was Chad. Fortunately, they managed to keep things going fairly well and finish well enough. Sandy worked back up to 12th from falling to mid pack. Darrel and I finished 1-2 under the last caution that Scot helped bring out (I almost smashed them both...on accident).
Race 2: Again, humans at the front, except Scot. He started last because of set up experimentation, and it would be caustic to his race due to unforeseen circumstances. We actually got off well now that we all knew how the green flags came out. In fact we ran about 25-30 green flag laps. Sandy was close behind me for a while with Darrel not far behind. They were a bit more conservative early in the run and I started gapping until we caught traffic. I definitely had to conserve fuel at that point and the two of them were having fun dodging the back-marker mine field. Chad had some unfortunate luck early on, getting spun and having no yellow flag to help him. I think that actually happened more than once. When the caution did come out, most of us had little issue...except Scot. Somehow, the track maker was an idiot and didn't measure the stalls correctly, leaving the last one to stick out of pit road by about 3 feet. Making his pit crew shy, I guess. So Scot got to drive 45 mph, receiving black flags like candy from a van, in order to keep from run out of gas. But it worked and he did eventually finish. Chad, however, did not, due to another late spin/wreck which had him facing the wrong way...into Darrel. Darrel somehow survived the experience to finish 2nd while Chad's bad luck continued to plague him and his engine.
Next week is Christmas so no racing. However, we'll likely do our regular run on New Years. I'll follow up via email with details. O' Reilly is up.
