'87 Winston Cup 2016 Series - 30 Charlotte

Another Chase race down and we're getting closer to the end.  We ran the day race just like they did this year, even though it was because of a rain check.  The number to beat was 35 DNFs.  Was this accomplished?

The field was kind of scattered for humans and it was going to be an uphill battle no matter what.  The other drivers were feisty and the action was ripe for a wreck.

It didn't take hardly a lap before things got going.  I ran over Davey Allison at the exact same time, Richard Petty was taking out Gant (stage left).  Notice the synchronis angles.

That's definitely how you want to start this kind of race.

Rick Wilson got caught in some track geometry and shot right up into the air, landing on and killing Michael Waltrip.  Zack wasn't having any of it and took the legends circuit.

Once we got going again, it was a mighty battle for the lead.

Only a few laps more and Zack was taking out Mike Potter as he worked through the field.

Darrel and Sandy had the situation mostly handled when along came a Scot to completely sideswipe them all.  He did kill Potter with minimal damage to his human friends somehow.

Back under green, I had lost 1st to Earnhardt and was jostling for the position back when we got hooked together.

He just spun down the inside with little effect and I was just slowed down enough that Terry Labonte had a go at me.  Notice I was running a perfectly fine line down the inside when he rubbed tires.

We both slammed the outside and another pileup ensued.

I wonder how many big ones we can have here.  Notice Earnhardt is STILL FINE!

I was barely running and had company at the back when we broke the 10 lap mark and restarted.

A slightly lengthier run was punctuated by Scot's more identifiable moves.

That was fairly small compared to the next one where I was run over by my friend, Benny Parsons, who thought it a good idea to suddenly dive to the inside and again rub tires.

I spun and hit the wall JUST passed the deadly opening.  That was a close one.

Humans all came down pit road this time.

Another good set of green laps when Scot tucked the corner a little too much.

We all know what happens then.

Another restart and humans were mostly fighting and frightening each other.

I was caught yet again with my meager minimum race pace when Sterling Marlin thought he'd have a go at my tires.  Sure why not, I didn't want to see the second half of the race anyway.

The tire marks tell the tale.

Morgan Shepherd and I had a connection.

And more died.  Including that SOB, Dale Earnhardt.  Good, die.  Oh, that's...that's harsh.

But not as harsh as Davey Allison bopping him in the ass right in front of Sandy while they were getting back up to speed.

Scot tried the Zack attack on this wreck wad and threw it down the infield.

Like my time on the back stretch, he almost had a life-ender right on that inside wall flat.  A close one indeed.

Darrel and Zack were working traffic quite well when Darrel got it up high off of two.

He came back down the inside but quickly corrected to give Zack room.

But Bobby Allison also had a run on him and shoved his nose to Darrel's bumper.

That whole equal-and-opposite-reaction thing happened and Darrel tore right into Zack.

I guess 3rd times the charm as they say.  With all the close calls us humans had with the walls coming off spins, how are the Duke Boys gonna get out of this one?

The answer is, they don't.  Or he doesn't.  Pure death met him at the wall and then chucked his soulless, vapid carcass and car all back into traffic.

Which included Sandy who was starting to get the hang of this whole slalom thing.  Death really wanted him too but couldn't have him.

Despite all the trouble behind, Darrel mostly just bounced harmlessly off the retaining walls and kept it going.

The next caution came when Scot got it loose off of four.  It's a tricky setup.

Shockingly enough, neither Sandy or Darrel got into him at all.  Like I said, he's really turning pro at avoidance, that Sandy.

Not to be outdone, Darrel took to Lawnmower Monstertrucks to beat Sandy across that line.

Many more green flags were had and Scot was fighting hard for position.  Just a few moments but no caution.  At this point, all humans were safe to the end so the hope was that everyone else would have to pit.

This was mostly working out until Darrel got into Bobby Allison who was pitting with Phil Parsons.

Sandy got a little scuffed but stayed away from Darrel.

Well, with their fuel strategy shot in the foot, it was an all or nothing single lap finish to grab as many spots as you could.

Sandy tried but all at once just slammed straight into the five of Geoff Bodine going onto the backstretch.

He was pretty much done for and Darrel swept by them both.  After that whole race, Sandy waits until the last lap to get in an accident.  Shame.

Scot was able to hold his own and bring home a much needed, top 10.

On to Kansas we go.
