Pot Luck 17 - R16-18 Destruction Arena

We leave the refined and tactical stylings of Honda Indy behind and move promptly to the chainsaw antics of Destruction Arena.  Three races in classic Twisted Metal Tour style.

Race 1:
40 laps of no damage insanity and things started great for newcomer, Gurton Buster.  An early crash sent him up the track and quickly out of sync with the pack.  No great harm, but not a great start.

The other human drivers were making a clean beginning but there was some close side-by-side with Webster and Smith.

The touch sent The Bear nearly into the end of pit road wall and he barely managed to clobber himself back to stability as Zack drove away.  I hear echos of an old rivalry...

Slab was doing a fairly decent job of dealing with the unusual tweak of having to use steering assist for his keyboard driving.  Unfortunately, the intersection wasn't the only thing he had to contend with and just getting around some of the competition was proving troublesome.

An
d when he did find his fellow competitors, it got ugly.  His race would put him towards the back after he was badly pummeled through the intersection throughout the race along with other incidents.

Hamilton was quickly working his way to the top when he finally did get caught up in a mess.

And because Darrel likes to do a thorough job, he made sure he was hit at least another 10 or 20 times before he got going again.  His race was a little better and he managed to climb back up and score some decent points with a 20th.

Tnadz was having a slummy start and managed to have encounters at the cross over several laps in a row.

He got going but not before Webster had made his pass and was shooting for the top tier.

Of course he and Buster managed to find each other again as they got caught in a couple accidents.

Tnadz rallied to catch up but was occasionally hindered by AI.  Guga Lima made a short cut to the pits.

GB was making his comeback when he got railed at the intersection and had to wait for Campos to disappear before he could even try to drive again.

The Bear was up in the top ten and feeling great about his chances with laps dwindling when he and Webster (3rd at the time) collided.  Sandy would lose more spots down to 15th where he'd finish out the race.

Buster was racing right with Tnadz as Smith's car came bounding out from his accident with Zack and the two came together.

Webster had more incidents as he tried to make up his positions but settled in for 5th.  Not bad and it could have gone much worse.

Despite early mishaps (and mid and late mishaps) for Tnadz and Buster, they took the top two spots respectively and with not much of a gap between them, especially for this track.  Good work for GB on his first taste of Twisted Metal style.

Race 2:
The second round with moderate damage and 20 laps had Buster being the first casualty again.  There wasn't a massive wreck at the start which caused a sizable bottleneck and some spinning resulted.

It's difficult to tell what happened next as GB was looking to pass Hamilton low and then Darrel swung down to either block or give him room high.

It didn't end well for Buster who was again spinning.

And all of this delaying action meant he was in a terrible spot for the cross over.

Gut Slab's bad luck continued into the second race as he got blasted by Navarro.

Hamilton was caught up in the same wreck and also ended up dead and upside down.

Sandy managed to miss the incident.

But fate wouldn't let him escape and he was smashed by the largest pack of cars left on the track.

GB was still motoring on, although his performance was hindered by previous and continuous damage.  But surviving is half the battle.

There was a tense moment when the two rivals passed and either one could have made a move.  But neither wanted to risk it.

This looked like it might be the case on the second occurrence when Valerio came into the picture.

This was the view out of the right side of Tnadz's car.  This one did finally end it for GB who finished in the teens.

Tnadz didn't get too far before dying on a Prati car who served as a semi-shield for Webster.

This was the view out of his left side.

Uh oh...wait a minute.

He was hit and sent spinning towards pit road.

And was not only lucky enough to just miss that wretched barrel...

...and avoid massive damage or rolling from grinding the wall...

...but he also was barely cleared by a fast-approaching teammate of the guy who just nailed him.

That bag of luck gave him the best finish of the humans in 4th.  Two top fives at Destruction Arena are no small feat.  Could he continue the charge and score some serious points?

Race 3:
The last round at 20 laps and full damage started with some smash hits.  Tnadz started losing control and nearly piled into the wreck that Gut Slab found himself in right after the intersection.

Webster just managed to sneak through the mess.

However he just barely got a tap from Valerio and spun.

Buster was minding his business when Salas took him out in turn 1.

Tnadz swung by and was looking for a high finish early.

Instead he just got high right in front of Webster.  Tnadz blasted right into Gut Slab and DNFed them both.

And Zack Webster's car was just barely caught in the aftermath resulting in unfixable damage.

Hamilton could have capitalized on all of the early deaths but lost it coming to the cross over.

He'd retire almost at exactly the same time as everyone else.  All the humans dead within the first lap.

Well all except one.  The Bear was still alive and feeling extremely lucky.

But the danger was high and there were still about 15 laps to go.  He barely made it past Bueno and had to slingshot off the pit road wall to stay a collision.

He also felt his breath catch (and his bowels drop) as Khodair was strolling through the intersection, off pace from damage.

With some damage of his own, Smith was somewhat easy pray for the competition as Zonta, the last car he could fight for position with, stormed by with the leader in tow.

But on the last lap, he stuffed it in the wall, giving Sandy the chance he needed to steal the spot back and take an 8th, his best finish of the season.  Well done and well fought.

There was lots of excitement and sadness.  Scot was back to join us but could not due to some technical difficulties.  A demolition track where Mad Max could not run...truly a dark day in racing.  However, Zack has remedied the situation with his pick next week and the group moves to 6 Feet Under for another TMT-style set of races.
