2020 Super Speedway Series - Round 6: Proving Grounds

Proving Grounds definitely lived up to its name and provided some of the most intense bump drafting racing so far.  Both finishes were very close and went down to hundredths of a second.

Race 1:

The race started with most humans in the back field and Tnadz in mid pack.  While he worked up to the front, he was soon joined by Zolecki who got a good start.  Webster and Egg were, more or less, leading a train of the remaining humans to the front.

But as Webster abandoned the bottom line halfway through the 4 lap sprint, Bear and Hamilton were mostly left to their own devices.  As Darrel closed in on Sandy's bumper, he had to back off and got to snaking.  When he drifted up the track, the hole he though was there was instantly filled and disaster struck.

The wreck took out the back half of the field.

But for the second week in a row, Myhr plunged through a hole that barely opened by the time he was there and gained several positions after a slow start.

By the last half lap, Zolecki and Webster found each other for their usual pairing on the outside.  Tnadz held the inside line with Egg pushing from the rear.  The twin pairs were in a drag race to the line.  Coming out of the last corner, 5th place came up and forced Zack to move out of line just enough to slow their advance.  That gave Tnadz advantage but The Egg was looking for ways past the 13, causing that group to slow.  All this happening in a matter of seconds allowed Jaime to close the gap and missed out on a win by .025 seconds.  The Egg is now owed a Diet Coke.

Race 2:

It was 2 laps into the 16 lapper before trouble started brewing.  A few cars were too close in the middle and spawned a mini crash that brought out the caution.

Slab and Sandy both had moments diving onto the "apron".

Zolecki was bumper grabbed by Hamilton who was running close on him to keep the power train moving.  Jaime held on and didn't lose many positions though.

On pit road, Hamilton had some issues as he overshot his stall and tried backing up into traffic to get to it.  Results were as expected.

Slab's stall was just outside of pit road so his crew figured they didn't need to do anything.

Under green, several cars made a dash for pit road as they ran out of fuel.

Darrel was in trouble again around lap 6 as he tried to stay with Myhr by moving up the track, into the 46.

Bear just wanted to lead a lap but Zolecki and Webster would rather he didn't.  Scot didn't help much.

But he did cause issues on pit road by letting his back end hang out by quite a bit, collecting passer-bys and creating havoc.

It was mayhem abound on this round of stops.

After the final round of stops and into the final laps, the caution came out with 2 to go.  The Know U tandem was leading the way but Egg was on a charge up the inside. 

Webster moved to block and the 8 squeezed the 34 to the apron.

As Egg came off the counter camber, he made slight contact with the 8, sending him up the track.

Not far from the line, he was collected by other cars.

Fortunately for him, all those who passed him had to go to the pits one more time and he was able to recover a 4th behind Tnadz.  Webster managed to beat out Egg at the line by not even a car length and the race finished under yellow.

Next week is the 3 mile clockwise oval of Orlando.
