Our first second half race and the first of the new year...was rather messy. Starting out, I was late (mmm, pie) and I had some issues from switching to the SSD so practice was a bit shorter. Darrel had to stop because he couldn't stop crying, or he just had eye surgery, something to do with the eye. None of the rookies showed and Chad was also out. Just three humans to take on the field. And we all survived....mostly.
Race 1: We all started towards the front, within the top 10. Good runs initially but there were problems. Starting with Sandy getting pushed and crushed into the wall and hit repeatedly. For the most part he fared well against the onslaught and there was no immediate caution. But eventually that would change. A few caution periods and we had a nice long green run. That would be spoiled later by Scot as he tore up some poor, unsuspecting chap. I think it also ended up sending Sandy down the order. Fortunately, he held in there and finished. Scot took advantage of late pitters and wrapped up in second with me not to far ahead, under caution.
Race 2: More spread out this time, front, middle, and end of the pack. Quite a bit of green flag racing for most of the race. There were a few cautions (non human, in fact) but there was a big one that hurt Sandy bad as Scot sent him a backmarker to catch. Sandy managed to stay out of trouble, despite the damaged ride and take 30th. Scot had a more zany run. Under one of the cautions we unfortunately missed that he could get the lucky dog. He still was able to stay at the front with his lap back while I ran in 1st behind him. Sadly, he got very loose off of 4 and bounced the inside wall, coming back up and just tapping me. This threw the yellow, but fortunately, the whole field stopped for us instead of the typical Hulk-Smash routine. This kept Scot in the game and he was able to move up to the top twenties by the end of the race. I eventually worked past J Joe for the win.
Next week is a truck track and our biggest venue at 1.25 miles: Gateway Night. Should be a lot of fun and a good bit of insight into Sprint Cup expectations.
