Saturday Night Stock Car Championship 2013 - 17-18 Salem

The Darlington/Bristol love child course known as Salem has come and gone.  A very fun track and a lot of great racing for the night.  Scot was off flying in black NSA choppers and Darrel was too busy poking his eyes out to come race.  I hope he gets that taken care of.  It sounds very frustrating to be a cyclops.  Three humans was probably acceptable at this track because there was plenty of wrecking.  Not an easy place to pass or even hold position alongside other cars.  Very fast, loose, and scary.

Race 1:  20 lapper to get things going.  And when they got going, there was immediately a crash.  Restart went better.  Sandy was working the back of the field and Chad was posted right around 20th: No Man's Land.  We actually got a handful of laps in before a small skirmish in the back of the field caused the first yellow.  And I will note it was not a human creation.
Chad struggled with AI through the field and, for his part, did an amazing job of keeping control and out of trouble.  It was not without incident, however.
I'm pleased to see that Chad is getting back into his old habits of causing a small altercation that leads to a massive explosion of cars.  He's like that kid with a shit-eating grin who goes and knocks over the first Domino and scampers away from the mess.  I can't wait for the Cup series.  Although I shouldn't say he got away clean in most instances.  Even under yellow, the NASCAR gods unleashed karma upon him.
Tis but a scratch.  He kept pushing and help in there...until the next big incident:
Chad made sure this one was professional and included at least 30-40% of the field.
Even Sandy got in on the fun and was turned right into the wall by a precarious backmarker.  It didn't stop there for him.  Same caution period, J Joe made him out to be his target of choice and gave him a good railing before forming up for the yellow:
Thankfully, not a single driver DNFed for the sprint.  In fact, no humans would be out of it completely tonight.  Not so for all racers...

Race 2:  An excellent start with Chad pulling a loopdieloo in qualifying: claiming to sandbag for a back row start when in fact he gunned it and earned 7th.  Now we know the score, Chad...
Only a few laps into the long 40 lap run, there would be a very large accident.  I don't know who did this.
Sandy was earning his way up the order when he got nailed from behind.

As you can see in the second shot, though, the 15 would pay more of a price as he got destroyed by the 73.  Too bad.  This caution worked out for all the humans as pretty much the entire field pulled in for gas.  Our tank would project to hold 35 some laps.  With all the cautions, it worked out that no one necessitated a pit stop.  Chad would require one latter for different reasons.  At this point, the humans held the podium spots:
But our friend from race one, J Joe, that dirt bag, scum-of-the-earth, Richard Petty look-a-like started back on his favorite punching bag.
Another caution bunched the field and Chad would have to contend with strong racers.  The combination of lap traffic ultimately decided his fate...
Again, very spectacular.  Not enough to kill himself or too many AI, but definitely back on his game for amazing wrecks.  What you don't see here is the repeated bashing he received after being righted and shuffled to the bottom of the track.  After disconnecting and coming back, he was several laps down but still running.  A top 35 would be all he could salvage from this, otherwise masterful race.
Meanwhile, Sandy was working through lappers and other non-competition when J Joe found him again.  While disappointing to have to deal with such targeted attacks, he lumbered on and pulled out a top 10 for the night.  I took the win and finished as per protocol.

With the last venue and final two races of the series a week away, it is time to consider points positions.  Right now I'm running out front without much worry from the top 5.  With makeup points, Darrel is sitting 7th with a max potential of 4th.  Sandy is 19th with potential of a top 10.  Scot is just ahead of Sandy in 18th and also holds a theoretical top spot of 10th.  Chad sits 37th but could easily climb to a top 30, 27th being the mathematical pinnacle.  Odie sits in 50th and could potentially make a massive comeback.  A single win would pry him from the well of defeat and launch him straight into a position that I haven't bothered to calculate.  But most amazing of all would be a shut out by Lee.  Should he enter the series and win, he would defeat everyone soundly.  I don't think he's going to do that though.  Sorry, Lee.

Bristol Night is up next week for the grand finale.  Should be fun.
