50's Short Track Classic 2015 - 29-30 Richmond

We took our league to the longest short track on the schedule and ended up running more yellow than green flag laps.  But no matter.  It was all worth it with some good racing.

Race 1:
Zack and I started toward the front after a mulligan.  Sandy and Darrel were back midfield.

Sandy was over eager to move up the order and immediately put the boots to the competition.

This had the unfortunate effect of taking Darrel around and bring out the caution.

We resumed racing but once again, Sandy became overzealous and took the corner by clipping Klock.

This didn't cause much of an accident but the officials threw their flags.

Darrel had had enough of these shenanigans and gave Sandy the old Iron Sides on the return to the line.

Our next yellow wasn't much later when Klock took out the 82 right into pit road entrance.

Just before that yellow, I had run wide while Zack took the lead.  However, I got a good run into one and stole it back.

After stalking me for several laps, he eventually lost grip through one and two for another caution.  Not too much harm done though.

Sandy was a real terror through the field, this time bouncing three wide into Kheene.

The result was less than satisfactory.

At this point I was in my fuel window and dove in with Zack and a few others.  Unfortunately, the rest of the field stayed out, supposedly thinking they were set on fuel.

As these things usually go, I got a bit rambunctious with the 72 of Grant and tried to take the corner deeper than him.  A spin and a yellow.

But wait, not just a spin.  Holzheimer thought it imperative to slam the hell out of the back of my car instead of play it safe.  Codger.

I know this looks like Sandy got him, but it was just Zack with some wheel spin.

Back under green and we were all rushing to make up positions when these two morons got together and came up into me.

And when we dropped the next green I had a great run when this bloke decided to drop down a hair, allowing me to catch him on the corner.

Things were quite exciting coming to the final laps.

And like always, Sandy was in the thick of it, making three wide the norm when the 92 got a slight impatient.

The spin was harmless but the loss in position was not.

Back on the restart and I, like my father, was pushing the competition too aggressively.

The turtles ahead jumbled around while Zack and I sought a hole to pull through.

It mostly opened for me but Zack got knocked by the 40 on the last lap.

The mess was Chad or Scot epic.

Darrel made out in the end, taking the win from Lee Petty who misjudged the distance and ran out of petrol.

Race 2:
The second round started similarly with Zack and I towards the front.  Darrel was closer this time and launched into the top ten within the first lap.

Also in the first lap was Sandy, once again trying to use his dive-bomb technique.  He might have been OK, had Al Unser not been there to help him along.

We got back going again with Zack running second not far behind me when he broke loose entering turn one.

Darrel gave a sympathetic slide and was forced to wait for the whole field to pass.

But in his attempt to get going, he backed right into the racing line where Lee Petty came around for the finishing touch.

A few of us had hit the pits, thus allowing some of the competition to pull up.  While I was defending my position, these two  must have not wanted to race sportsmanlike...

...and wrecked badly.  But Sandy and Zack benefited and moved up the order.

In fact, with more in the pits, Sandy was second for the restart and Zack was just outside the top 5.

Alas, he thought Sandy's technique was worth a shot and employed it heavily.

The results, as always, were unsatisfactory.

End.

Back to green and after a few laps, the 75 took a bite out of the 46.

And by the next run of greens, the 7 was spinning the slowing Trickle into the wall as well.

We had a handful of our 40 laps left and Sandy used every one to claw back up in position, even working a slide job on the 75 coming to the front stretch.  Satisfactory.

I ultimately pulled the top podium spot with a few scrapes up the side.

We now carry on to the next dirt track:  Lebanon.
