50's Short Track Classic 2015 - 33-34 I-70 Raceway

We're closing in on the end with only a few more races to go.  Here's a familiar one which we determined is what a track might look like if Bristol and Phoenix had a baby.  As a note, this was the first race where we ran a direct connection and it couldn't have been smoother for multiplayer action.

Race 1:
Qualifying was tough, especially on the first race where not a single human was in the top 10.

The first caution came early, as always, when Zack felt he needed to make his move early by dive bombing the inside.

It would have almost worked if he hadn't of pushed up coming off the apron.

The 10 of Keene went flying up the track.

And started a chain reaction.

Darrel got through with Sandy knocking the Hudson Hornet out into centerfield and Scot had to evade hard left to avoid the sprawling vehicles.

Back to green and things didn't take long to get rowdy again thanks to an over reaching Hamilton (not our Hamilton).

Trickle got knocked up...

And actually recovered OK.  But everyone else around him went flying.

What a mess!

Scot was trying to skirt the wreck when Zack came shooting up from down below.

Unfortunate results.

But he managed to right himself as he came to the apron, a little worse for wear.

And it only got worse as he was trying to work himself out and The Bear came out of nowhere to smash into the back of him.  Good thing he had all four locked up.

OK, back to green and we're raci...

Yellow flag immediately!  Darrel was stopped down low all of a sudden as he found himself out of place and trying to avoid a black flag.

OK, things were going well for several laps before Scot got into Grant

Once again, he was rocking and rolling, this time getting Darrel caught in the mix while he almost avoided contact with the 1.

The 34 almost avoided trouble until he came back down to the apron where the 98 was coming through.

That hit sent him over...

...into the 61...

...and back across the 75 where he final stopped.  Happy Birthday, Darrel.  No, it really was his birthday.  Although a little less happy after this present...

Another nice, long set of laps until Sandy was feeling racy with Moses Brings Plenty.

They both rode up the track together when all of a sudden, Lightning McQueen came roaring around and cracked the front of the 22, sending the orange car down into me.

The damage was minor, but the force knocked me spinning into the pits where I received a speeding penalty.

Which put me back in the pack where Zack was continuing his efforts of causing maximum chaos.  In hindsight, I should have just passed under yellow and cleared the black from there...

...then this wouldn't have happened.  Thanks, Zack!

We had several more to go when Darrel's car just died.  Engine blowed up good.  Happy Birthday!

Closing in now when the 88 got a little too touchy...

Humans mostly had this avoided.

Well, until Scot sent a few folks into fits.

Even though these cars aren't being piloted by Earnhardt and Elliot, I thought it was interesting that they were right by each other...like old times.

Racing to the line, the 35 was fighting for position and turned me into the wall.

I lost a spot to the 61 and was going to give retribution to the 35 when Scot took car of things for me.  Yes, well, very good then.  In the end, not the best finishes we could have hoped for but still into some points.

Race 2:
A little better qualifying for Race 2 but really only for one human.

Actually had several laps in before our first caution.

While Darrel was unaffected, Scot had to deal with this idiot just sliding out in front of him.  Just some nose damage.

More laps in and Zack just lost it off of two.  A slicker spot on the track.

I too found my self having to correct there while chasing down Petty.

And over correcting...

At least I managed to take out the father.

And a few others.

Which turned into a runaway nuclear reaction of crashes.

Even cars approaching the wrecking were getting scuppered.

Halfway through about and all the humans were together, except one.

After several laps of strong racing, Darrel got it a touch slidey off of two and ran up on the Purple People Eater as he graciously merged to the racing surface.

The correcting and bouncing about started this wreck right in front of Sandy who threw anchors.

Darrel was swung back down right in front of Zack who was already doing his best to get out of the way.

But too late and this second shunt shot Darrel back up in front of oncoming traffic where he got a lethal hit.  Happy Birthday yet again.

Scot had a moment running back to the line.

But recovered and held the position.

Back to green and back in the pack were the remaining humans in various states of disrepair.

But onward and upward for some more laps.  Zack was driving well enough until he closed too quickly on the 40.  Slowing up made him understeer into the 32.

Glancing off of these two riding on the outside shifted weight in the Red Bull car causing a spin.

That would have been the end of it, but just as he did to Darrel before, Scot was right there for a second hit.  This time, instead of hitting another human directly, Scot cueballed the 36 right at Zack.

Marksman Class.

This second impact would cause the most damage, leaving Zack to fall down the order as he worked on his car.

Three humans left and less than a dozen laps to make up positions.

The racing was dicey and we were all less than a half stretch away from one another at any one time.

Pressing for everything that was left in our cars, Sandy was nearly run off by the 99 who was constantly returning from pit road.  Really, he must have just been doing doughnuts at pit exit.

5 to go and Sandy was really pushing the limit as he took a page from Zack's book and went three-wide into one.

Somehow, everyone was only jostled.  But watch Tow Mater as he tries to capitalize on the action.

As Sandy came back down to recover and avoid the sloppy cars up top, I ran up on Tow Mater while watching what was surely going to be a wreck.

Had I not knocked the 95 slightly off, he would have barreled straight into Sandy.

But as it went, we all continued on no worse for wear.

It was not to be without yellows in the end as Zack lost it loose again as we came to the final laps.

Scot nearly struck him and weaved out of the way by mere millimeters.

Despite the various events, Sandy and son managed an astounding 9th and 10th with Scot up to 14th and Zack not far from there.
