'87 Winston Cup 2016 Series - 01 Daytona

Our inaugural race for the series started off promising with all humans heading up the field...
 ...and Sandy leading us all.

Very quickly, Darrel moved to the outside.  I don't recall what was going on if he was having some handling issues or got caught out but he quickly dropped back.

Right as Darrel was suffering some woes, Zack came off the bottom and pushed up into my fender.  I shot to the wall but only scraped some paint.

A huge battle was unfolding at the front with Zack and Myer scrambling for position.

But then Scot swung inside a little too hard off of turn four, bounded off a car and then the wall and straight back into Rusty Wallace.

The accident started unfolding in front of me and I thought this might be the end as Scot did a nose stall down the tri-oval.

Not too many cars were taken out but there were some damaged rides.

We were only a handful of laps in so most teams went to pit while some humans opted to keep position, being that we would have to pit at least once at some point anyway.

On the green, I had a strong run at Sandy and he defensively (and kind of like a jerk) squeezed up the track, forcing me to roll out of the throttle.  At the same moment, Zack got a wiggle-rub from Darrel Waltrip and shot straight into the 90.

The resulting crash would be the end for Zack as he rolled to the apron.

At this point, nearly all drivers pulled in to pit again.

Darrel, who had been nursing a weirdly handling car also came to pit road while none other than Scot Myer stayed out and zoomed to second.

On the restart, we had Dale Jarrett on the inside a lap down.  I had a good run on Scot and was shooting to clear him by turn one so we can link up and draft up to Sandy.

Unfortunately, he misjudged the distance between the cars around him and took my fender by just a touch.

This was the end for me.

Scot also had a rolling exit from the race along with several others.

At this point, Sandy made his first stop, relinquishing the lead from a fairly average pit stop.

But he fought his way through traffic very quickly and within a few laps was within striking distance of the lead.

But 4 wide congestion out of turn four would do what it always does and cars started bouncing off each other.

And the yellow was out again.

Everyone was back in for a last pit pass.  Darrel was caught speeding and would go to the back while Sandy had yet another sloppy stop.

With less than half of the 40 lap race to go, Sandy was putting pressure on the field.  Then he got to Brett Bodine and pressured a little too much.

He pushed up and touched the wall, falling back.

In a desperate attempt to catch the draft, he was trying his damnedest to move up.

But as Lake Speed moved over, Time Richmond wasn't giving an inch and neither was Sandy.  As physics goes, this is a good example.

The end of an otherwise stellar run.  While not dead, he was not in the same shape as before.

Back under green and cars started peeling off thinking they wouldn't make the distance.

Sandy smelled blood in the water and was in attack mode again but found himself off the bumper of Geoff Bodine (the Bodines are everywhere).

And just like Keselowski and Edwards, The Bear was in the fence.

Solidly in the fence.

And as a sun was setting for one human, one was rising for another.

With three laps remaining, Darrel was putting everything he had left into his drive.

In 10th position, he was looking for ways around everyone when he got into Davey Allison.

Davey spun across his bow...

...but the inertia would push Darrel into a big slide too.  This ended the race and Darrel was the highest finishing human at 15th.

Our next venture is Atlanta in a sunny daytime Georgia.
