'87 Winston Cup 2016 Series - 02 Atlanta

A good day for racing even though I showed up to host extremely late (thank you work meeting).  But we got all in and even though I had technical issues (screen freaking out and textures collapsing to obscure the view completely) it worked out.
Unlike Daytona, humans sandwiched the field and we got off clean.

After four or five laps, Darrel ran off the corner a touch high.  I believe he was chasing it up the hill.

But he already was shifted in weight and slid harmlessly across the infield with not even a yellow.

He righted and banged on.

Further up the order, Zack was working over Combs.

But with Combs, he got more than a brush with disaster.  While he almost kept from hitting by a hair, he got tangled up.  Fortunately no rollers in this one but he did have a nasty split end.

Sandy was also collected but was slowed up enough that he just took some dents.  Scot smoked his tires straight to the knot and short of skid marks, he was unaffected.

That is, until, Darrel ran up on him and tore at the rear end.

With just 12 of 65 laps in, nearly everyone was in for tires and gas.

Sandy had stayed out for bonus points but tucked inside to stay out of trouble.

Outlaw found his way to Combs as well and the second Combing was just as bad as the first.

Just like Zack before, Scot ran up on the 64 and identical results.

In this version, the 29 got a roller and braided the fence.  Yeah that was a bit of a stretch.

An early night for Outlaw and Combs.

This time everyone is in for fuel and tires.

Back to racing and Darrel was fighting for position when the 15 got a run and put him up the line.

That got him loose as this track does and he was spinning again.

Planting roughly into the home stretch wall.

Back under green and I was starting to get caught as I attempted to run conservative lines to keep my fuel and tire use low.

Fortunately, we caught Darrel and he slowed up the field for me.

Especially Brett Bodine who is making himself known among the humans.

There he got bounced into the wall.

However, this minor scrape was the only major contact he suffered.  Granted, his car was smoking but he was still running.  And that would be very important for events later on.

Around half way and we would need one more stop after this to make the fuel last.

Knowing we would need another stop, Webster stayed out and picked up some points to jump back into the pits and top off.

Back to racing and Darrel was well off pace after his various transgressions.

While trying to stay out of the way (and doing a good job as far as I could tell) Darrel Waltrip came flying up on him for a smash and drive.

But only one Darrel would come out on top for this one and it wasn't the Tide ride.

Causing a wreck more massive than any big ones at Daytona, Hamilton managed to single handled make a junk yard at the start finish line without trying.

Sandy came screeching up on the field and smashed the 67.

Dale Jarrett and Dave Marcus were there to catch him, fortunately.

What few cars were left came to pit road for a final stop.

With about four laps or so left, Zack had another run in with a slower AI (Rusty Wallace).

And they both limped on.

We would wind out under yellow and I would take a win.

But it wasn't the end of the story.  Back behind all this, Darrel was wrecking people under caution.

While this almost seems harmless being that he was down 6 laps, it actually cost Sandy positions which he was re-awarded post-race.  Even still, Hamilton officially receives a warning for dangerous driving.

Next week we are at the desert oval in Las Vegas.
