Pot Luck 17 - R1-2 Phillip Island

After a protracted time away, we return again to the racing circuit with the famous Pot Luck Challenge.  The first track of the series was chosen by Gurton Buster: Phillip Island.  Two rounds with a tricky strategy of no mandatory pit stops.  However, at 17 laps, one could only just barely make it to the end if he conserved with tires and fuel.

Race 1:

The first round started in smoke (usually how it ends for some).

Buster got a quick shot forward and firmly took the lead.

The first casualties of the race as Gut Slab drove hard into Honda corner.

And continued to bounce off of other cars as they actually took the hairpin.

Suzuki would get a double shot of slab on the next lap as he got tapped in the same spot.

At the front, Gurton Buster was cruising in first with Riggleman keeping pace when he caught the grass and got loose.

That shot him straight into the pit road wall.  Shockingly not dead, his ride would fail to finish the race.

Back in the pack, Slab was still working his way up the order but was definitely getting as much as he was giving.

Hamilton had begun to take up positions when he had to pull up early for Lukey Heights.

That got him and Genz together and they both were off.

While Riggleman was dominating the front, an aggressive shift caused his engine to blow out.

Suzuki was in for yet another wild ride as Caca Bueno tried to rejoin the track surface and the two made contact.

And he was promptly smashed by Casagrande.

Hamilton was attacking the Eisenbahn team again and making up ground.  However, he would meet his demise by overdriving GM corner a few laps later.

Slab was up to 3rd when he was tapped by one of the Eurofarma racers.

This trend continued for the next few laps.

Eventually, his tires would get completely cooked.

His great run crumbled and he had no choice but to call for a tow.

After taking his time, Tnadz rolled to victory in the first round of the season.

Followed by a closing Zack Webster who ran a convincing second.

Race 2:

The second round started similar to the first.

Although a couple drivers had to suffer through success ballast and start in the back.

One suffered quite a bit as Zonta took to Tnadz's fender, sending him well back.

Gut Slab was more tame in the second opener.  Only sending off one car!  Although, it wasn't really his fault, he was just driving.

Tnadz found revenge as he started working up the order.

Slab and Hamilton barely came together and lost more time than bodywork.

Although that was almost not the case a couple corners later as Slab was dealing with some scorched tires.

Zack was climbing the field when the nine got into him, ruining a potential podium.

In a repeat of Race 1, Buster slide the tires off of the last corner.

While the damage was less severe, it was enough to let Riggleman run off with the lead.  And they had been running nose to tail for about half the race.

Gut Slab took a different strategy and parked it for a snack!

While Mark was leading the way, he got into traffic which was not terribly forgiving.

The Bear was having his best road course race in a while and had a top ten finish in the bag when Marcos and Campos ran him off the track.

Not far ahead, Zack Webster was trying to fend off Hamilton with his injured ride.

The two nearly came together as they both tried to race turn two and stay off of each other.

Webster suffered the worst as he ran off and smacked the wall.

Coming to the last few laps, a battle of strategies was playing out as Tnadz was desperately fending off the damaged, but pit-refreshened car of Gurton Buster.

In the end, he made the pass and took a second place ahead of Tnadz.

Mark Riggleman took the checkered flag for his first win of the season.

The battle between Webster and Hamilton raged until the very end and only a couple seconds separated them.

When Slab did make it back on the track, things didn't go so well.

We now head off to Barber Motorsports Park.  Two rounds: one standing start, the other rolling.  No pits required but it may be suggested.
